Gender roles are the socially accepted and expected attitudes, behaviours, actions and responsibilities associated with women or men in a particular cultural context. Gender roles reflect perceptions of what behaviour is considered appropriate for women and what is considered appropriate for men in a particular society.
Different eras and different societies have been dominated by different understandings of what activities and behaviours are appropriate for women and for men. Thus, gender roles change over time.
